Bauta is one of the most classic Venetian masks. Its shape is simple, mainly white, and the lower part is tilted like a bird's beak, which is convenient for masked people to talk, eat and drink. Wearing bauta also requires wearing matching clothes - triangular black hat, cloak, etc. this dress is called "tabarro". Bauta is usually worn by men. In the 18th century, the Venetian government stipulated that male citizens participating in activities must wear bauta to hide their identity at specific decision-making meetings.

Colombina carnival mask
Colombina is a semi mask that covers only the eyes, nose and upper part of the cheek. It is usually decorated with gold, silver, crystal and feathers. The mask was named after a stereotyped female character in the Italian impromptu comedy (Commedia dell'Arte). But nowadays, both men and women wear this kind of mask, which is probably the most familiar type of mask in China.

Medico della peste carnival mask
Medico della peste is characterized by a long nose and round eyes. It has a simple appearance and little decoration. It is the most bizarre and recognized mask in Venice. However, it was not a carnival mask at first, but a tool for doctors to treat patients, just as its name means: Doctor of plague. In the 17th century, Charles de lorme, a French doctor, wore this mask, a long black cloak and a pair of round glasses when seeing patients. It didn't appear in Carnival until modern times.

Moretta carnival mask
Moretta is an oval black velvet mask worn by women. It originated in France. At that time, celebrities and ladies wore moretta to visit the monastery. This custom soon spread to the Republic of Venice and became popular. Wearing this mask needs to be fixed with teeth, so you can't speak with it. Moretta is often covered with a veil.

Volto
Volto (Italian "face"), also known as larva (meaning "ghost"), is also an iconic Venetian mask. It is mainly white with gold-plated decoration. It has complete facial features and covers the whole face. Wearing it, you can't tell who it is.

Pantalone
Pantalone also comes from Italian drama. It is usually the image of an old man with a nose like a crow's mouth and crooked eyes. Like most masks, Pantalone has only the upper half of his face.

Arlecchino
Arlecchino is a colorful mask shaped like a clown, covering the whole face, with a short nose, drooping eyebrows, rising corners of the mouth, and exaggerated head and neck decoration. He is a clown in the drama, lacks reason, and usually serves as a servant for characters like Pantalone.

Zanni
Zanni's shape is very close to that of medico della peste, with a long nose, raised eyebrow bones and a low forehead. Zanni is also a dramatic image. It is said that the longer the nose, the more stupid the character is. His low forehead is a symbol of his stupidity.

Gnaga
The name of this half covered cat shaped mask comes from the voice of a cat in the Venetian dialect. In the past, it was worn by men who wanted to dress like women (transvestites?), who used this clever and charming trick to bypass Venetian law. A man wearing a mask will never be arrested for violating social customs and morality, because he only plays a role. For this reason, those wearing gnaga masks can call passers-by and make frivolous comments to passers-by, and are not bound by the law. This also gives rise to the noodles of rabbits, foxes, big gray wolves and so on
